been to a bootfair this morning

i went to a bootfair this morning and came across something for a family called oates from cornwall i think its a couple of bill reciepts from a mr R f Oates to Smith Paul and Archer and the other one is to the same people but from a mrs Eva Oates also a letter of reciept for a sum of money left to Josephine from her father Charles Oates im not very good at describing items like this but if it belongs to anyones family i would love to know

That sounds interesting. I wonder what dates they are? If you do a name search on ...Search family trees... on GR, there is someone with these names on their tree. They would probably be glad if you sent a PM. Gwyn

there are a load of richard oates from cornwall when i searched the name the dates on the reciepts are 1892 and 1893 and the the one writtenby josephine is dated 1896 so im guessing her father died in 1896 i just wish i could find something like this for my familys lol

There is this family in 1871, which has a Josephine, daughter of Charles. A search on GR shows that they may be on Penny's tree. have messaged penny fingers crossed they may belong to her i have just taken items very carefully from the frame i found them in and there is a envelope addressed legacy paid to josephine +septmas by M.F.Oates also to g.w.h.c a brother

its really strange but i spotted it just proped up on the floor next to some old books i also rescued aold photo but no name on it apart from the photographers in halifax so i guess she will just have to stay with me just seemed such a shame as the man was throwing it away so i brought her home

I know what you mean, Debbie. I was in Winchester recently and there was a market type stall selling old postcards and photographs. I noticed one of a particular man, who looked so proud as he posed for his photo to be taken ...and now here he was on sale in the middle of a city and no means of identifying him. Gwyn

I havent been to a bootfair for a few years now but I bet there are some real finds at them if you are into family history. Wasnt interested when we used to go but would certainly have a keen eye if I go again. lol
