God that was quick, thanks both for introducing me to this, I was wondering what the ancestory thing was. I did pay for 50 credits last week and only used 17 before it ran out, as I didn't get very far. Am doing a project with my students about researching their family trees and I can't even get going myself!!!! |

Thanks for that, glad you could help a bit Rose, I am a complete dumbo when it comes to all this, spend far too much time on here and the tree gets little attention these days. Mandy, pleased you are getting the hang of this, you will become addicted I can assure you, either by your research or by the friends you will make on here, or both! Will say goodnight, as might disappear in a bit, have lots of emails I should be replying to, but keep finding interesting threads to read! Catch you again, take care Liz |

To find out about credits look on left hand side at Help/FAQ it tells you how many credits you need for various look ups. Hope this helps. Beryl x |

Thanks Beryl, had a look on FAQ and can't seem to find anything on credits. However, when I want to view details of a family members' it says I have to buy credits. I did that last week and paid £5 for 50 credits, But then do you still have to buy family members birth certificates from a registry office, couldn't it get very expensive? How far have you got with yours? Mandy |

Hi Mandy and welcome to Genes :-) Yes, this can be a very expensive (not to mention addictive !) hobby. The best way to start is by speaking to your family and asking them for information. You may find that they have certificates with the family papers. Always work back from what you know. Most importantly always keep a record of where you have searched (even if you find nothing) - it may save you repeating yourself later. You can sometimes get away without ordering certs (£7 each if ordered online through the General Register Office), but if you get seriously hooked, you will want proper proof of relationships and the best way to do that is to get the BMD certs. You will find the members on here are only too happy to help you - most of those who do 'look-ups' can be found on the Tips or Records boards. Very best of luck!! Maz. XX |
