I attended a bird count this morning which was held in our local library and though the staff did their utmost to make it a success it turned out a disaster. I am very friendly with the lady who runs the library and I know she has a wonderful sense of humour. Similar to me in some respects. lol. I promised her that I would submit a report to save her the job and then having read it she could forward it on to her head office. I can guarantee you one thing, it will definitely make her laugh. I hope you will read it and find it amusing as it is nothing only a joke. Jeff x Report to follow. |

January 27th 2007. To whom it may concern As a local respected member of the R.S.P.B., I am writing to you on behalf of the staff of the local library. May I begin by saying that we in the village are very fortunate in having such a wonderful library with staff who are diligent, helpful and very friendly. As a regular visitor to the library, I was cordially invited to attend and take part in the national bird count which took place this morning. On my arrival, I was treated courteously, shown to the viewing position and then provided with refreshment which was both very welcome and very enjoyable. However, I must stress this point, I noticed during my research that the facilities provided for the wildlife were, to put it bluntly, substandard. Although the staff had made every effort to make this venture a success, it appears that they were not given adequate advice concerning the matter. My observations showed me that some mistakes were made and hopefully lessons may be learned which will bode well for the future. During my observations I noticed that a) there was no bird table provided. I realise however that due to certain cultures in our society this was impractical. b) Although the fat balls and peanut feeders were located in a suitable position, It appears that the time lapse from the beginning of the preparations to the actual event were inadequate. I have found that birds sometimes need a little time to adapt to certain changes in their environment and in particular, the placing of feeding stations in the locale is of paramount importance if it is to prove successful. c) I also noticed that the access road to the library car park was in close proximity to the chosen site and since vehicles were using it, sad to say, it detracted the birds from approaching the site. I sincerely hope that you will take into account the points that I have made and that you will give considerable thought with regards to your preparations in future. Sadly, in submitting my conclusions I feel somewhat dejected, for in view of the above mentioned mistakes that were made, it is my sad task to report to you, that after my research this morning, I can quite categorically state that I have seen more birds in a budgie cage. Yours respectfully A Twitcher. |

Teresa, I am taking it to the library on Monday morning. Whether my friend submits it or not it is up to her. I must admit though, I think those in the head office would see the funny side of it if she sent it. Jeff x |

Very good Jeff. I have been observing all day...and am disappointed, they have all gone! I had blackbirds and thrushes, sparrows and starlings....nothing all day, well, actually, nothing in the garden for the past month Tina x |

Doing mine tomorrow too, neighbours are always out and making a noise on a Saturday and their dogs get too excited and scare the birds away. Sure our regular blackbird will pop along. |
