GARDEN WATCH. I love to watch my garden through the seasons of the year, For the lovely wildlife that abounds, it brings me lots of cheer, Now though my pretty garden, it is just an urban plot, The birds all seem to like it and they visit me a lot. A robin came around one day and landed on my patch, He scared the other birds away, for him they were no match, It seems he's claimed my garden for his own territory, And doesn't like the other birds to snoop around, not he. But when he leaves the bluetits come and feed upon the nuts, While little sparrows preen themselves in some small dusty ruts, And then the blackbird, he shows up and keeps on hopping round Searching for that tasty worm that might pop from the ground. Then when the thievish magpie comes it drives the others mad, An old rhyme says that two bring joy but one can make you sad, And that is true for sometimes, he makes my heart feel sick When I see him make a tasty meal of a little bluetit chick. A sparrowhawk arrived on day and caused a bit of gloom, The small birds, they all flew away to give him lots of room, For when he comes to visit me he often causes strife, He's just another predator in the long great chain of life. I love to see the chaffinches when they come round to feed, They dine, then seem to thank me for providing them with seed, They perch upon my garden fence and thrill me with their song, Then they take off and fly away, alas, they don't stay long. I really love my garden, it's a happy meeting den For finches, dunnocks, sparrows, tits and the cocky little wren, So if you want to share these joys, the only things you'll need Are a bath that's filled with water and a table topped with seed. Jeff xx |

I don't just watch the birds for one weekend a year, I watch all the year round, but this years RSPB birdwatch as far as i am converned will be a washout. Why because weather wise it is to open, no really bad weather to drive the birds into the garden to feed. So instead of 23 Goldfinches like last year I will be lucky to see one and it is like that for most of our birds, the one which we normally have 1, the Robin we will have 3 or four. |

Hi Roger I can see where you are coming from, but I think part of the reason the RSPB do this annual event is surely to raise awareness and to get people actually to think about how the environment and weather can affect the lives of our birds Dee :-)) |

Jeff that is a lovely poem aren't you clever. I have the form downloaded to watch the birds though I do love to watch them all year round.Unfortuanley most of the birds go in my front as I only have a back yard and I can't see out the front window to watch them properly. But we do get the Doves / Blackbirds / Starlings and a few others in the back on the table. We used to have a Jenny Wren but haven't seen her this year. Hope she arrives again soon and of course our resident Robin. Germaine x |

Loved the poem Jeff brings back memories of an english garden, my Mum had robins and thrushes - not sure mine will count though - ganggangs, galahs, sulphur crested cockatoos, crimson rosellas, top knot pidgoens, red crested finches, blue finches, choughs king parrots and kookaburras - but we do have sparrows and blackbirds too lol JA |

The RSPB Birdwatch has once more gripped our nation, I've put the peanuts, seed and fruit out on the feeding station, The birds, however, seem to as laugh With my frustration mounting, They hide until its over, then Come out when I've done counting! Once more I'll send in 'nil return', Yet other days, there's plenty, - The garden's full of greedy birds, The peanut nets are empty! Jay. |
