I cant say I have ever been nervous about flying. I reckon the pilot wouldnt be in his seat if he wasnt well trained. Driving can be scary, there are some idiots in the other vehicles. And accidents can happen. Last Sunday a big truck and trailer unit tipped over on our Rimutaka Hills and squashed a car, killing the driver of the car and seriously injuring her passenger. At least the plane wont be squashed by a bigger one tipping over. I have been up in small planes, loved it, particularly when we flew around Mt Ruapehu while it was erupting, back in 1996. The advice about exercising the legs is very good. When I went to England in 1997 I would go down the back near the loo and do leg-stretching exercises, soon had others copying me. Also wise to avoid alcohol, drink lots of water to avoid dehydration. Have fun. You will love it Im sure. Wish I was with you. Huia in New Zealand.

Donna, take some sweets to suck at take off cos it helps the pressure in your ears, get some rescue remedy drops, you can take as many as you need if you get panicky, but honestly, have flown loads of times and it is lovely, especially if you have someone nice to hold your hand. Took my son to Malta when he was just 3 and a bit and he was fine too. Have never had a problem with airline food but also, never drunk more than one alcoholic drink before takeoff or during the flight, not worth risking the headache or hangover on your first day of your holiday and if you or your friends overdo it and get rowdy or sick, you will make yourselves very unpopular with the other passengers and the airline staff. Hope you have a great time and a brill birthday. Where are you going and how is your Mum now? Liz, who was only thinking about you today.

Hope you have a marvellous holiday in May BB I was in tears first time I travelled on a plane, but, I reasoned with myself that the Crew do it for a living and have to fly maybe every day! Just like taking a bus! I love it now and have been on a lot of long haul flights. Remember to drink lots of water or soft drinks,I never think alcohol does any good because of dehydration. Have fun. It's the safest form of travel you know! However, if you are really really nervous of flying you should visit your GP. Mine prescribed valium for me and for the first time ever I had a completely worry free flight, and a wonderful holiday in Canada. Dee x

I suck extra strong mints when we take off. make sure I have a whisky and a wine with the meal. usually just eat the roll, cheese etc and avoid any cooked chicken like the plague, plus anything with cream on it (trifles etc). Always read all the way. Got used to it now but not overkeen ,mainly because it is boring. Ann Glos

On long flights remember its a good idea to exercise your legs, to avoid any DVT problems, get up and have a walk around .. Bob

I remember the first time I flew, I was nearly in tears! Got up in the air and I wonder what on earth I'd made such a fuss about, quite looked forward to the flight back after that. I enjoy flying now, good job as I have an 8 hour flight to go home to the UK every year. Fiona. x

I'm always nervous when I fly, last time, 7 hr flight, made sure I had a good book, not that I needed it, after a couple of drinks I slept like a baby :)) Try not to work yourself up too much, do some relaxation & deep breathing. It will help. Heather x
