are worth their weight in gold!! Just spoken to one of the nurses where Grandma is and explained where I am etc and not being able to get to her until Sunday and she's offered to get all Grandma needs and I can pay her on Sunday when I go there!!! She's an absolute darling!!

I agree Diana, When my Father was dying, they were Darlings, all of them. They are Angels most of them, and not paid enough by the N.H.S. Roxanne x

Couldn't agree with you more Diana. When my wife was in Intensive Care ( June 2004 ) I was so impressed. Naturally I sent a thank you letter both to them and the Special Care Ward that my wife eventually went to - then General Ward and then, thankfully home! I still remember the heading on the letter that I sent; 'Dedication is not dead, it's alive and well in the ICU' (Intensive Care Unit) I had a beautiful reply from them - which I shall keep. p.s. I also donated to the wards. Not for purchasing equipment but for staff enjoyment. (I stipulated that.)

Now the only sad point has been made already - the nurses are great but the system STINKS!! They aren't paid enough and they release people too easily in my opinion!! Grandma is getting her wish to go home.... which would be great but they won't supply a night nurse and hence its going to be worry city for her family from Feb 5th every night!! ;o(

:'o) sniff sniff - you all have me blubbering like a baby now! Our nurses don't train for and do their jobs to make money, they do it because they care and get the job satisfaction of making a genuine difference to peoples lives. I'm at the end of my training with only 6 months till I qualify as a childrens' nurse, I've seen how sh*t the system is but as along as the patients are stuck with the current NHS system, I'll be there looking after sick kids. Many of our Nurses have hearts of pure gold and worth 10x what they are payed, but unfortunately the system is not finatially sound so they can't pay the staff what they truely deserve.

lunar you are so right hun they are so dedicated arent they? while mum was in hospital they wanted to do so much to help her, such as get the physio in etc but the consultants wouldnt allow them.thy said that it would be a waste of resources as mum would never sit up again let alone walk!!! one little nurse was so upset she sat crying on mums bed. they were rushed off their feet all day. i visited every afternoon and fed and changed mum so they could at least help someone else. good luck with your training lunar you are an angel susie

Having just spent a week in hospital I can't speak highly enough of the nurses who looked after me. They were wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble and they were so kind. System is rubbish but the nurses are fab! Daisy

i think some, obviously not all, doctors ought to go the same people skills training school as nurses. i have never yet met a bad nurse in all the 7 years mum has been in and out of cancer care. all of them, are friendly, compassionate and have often stayed on after their shift to check mum is ok after ops and things. but, the doctors always seem to have somewhere else to be. i dont know what it is with them but they dont seem to have the interpersonal skills of nurses. in fact i would go as far as to say my local GP is flippin useless! lol! so in summary, nurses - yay! doctors - boo!

Paul,I agree with you:-) Some of the doctors are a disgrace,I had alot of dealings with doctors and consultants when my Father was ill, even the nurses were disgusted at them.

some Doc's are too big for their boots, the HO's and SHO's are lovely but the Registars are okish and the consultants can be pig headed (not all mind I know to lovely down to earch consultants and another who is a cow to his staff but great with patientsd)

Some years ago I had an appointment to see a very grand lady Gynaecologist. All the staff feared and loathed her - I already knew that from local gossip. When I came face to face with her, I was astonished to recognise the lowly registrar, who 25 years previously, had sat on my hospital bed in the middle of the night, holding my hand and mopping my tears after the birth of my stillborn daughter. My most recent stay in hospital was the observation that the nurses and doctors were all terribly busy - somewhere else. I think you have to be an angel, anyway, to be a nurse, what a thankless and underpaid job it is. OC

After a 2 month stint in hospital I have to agree with most of you BUT there's often one ' rotten apple'. My rotten apple - a little Hitler - told me to use the bathroom the following morning. I could hardly walk but I did as instructed. Result: A very serious fall which put me back ages. And to top it all she pinched my little penlight!!!!
