I always boil my dishcloths in an old fashioned way, I use cotton ones, I have an old preserving pan I use to boil them on the cooker, I then pop them all in the washing machine to rinse and spin, I also do face flannels the same as they are all white, unless I have enough to boil in the washing machine of course, I also put my dishcloths in the microwave, mine haven't yet caught fire but I'm blowed if I'm gonna try with a sponge! I use a lot of bleach in my kichen sink and waste disposal as I have a white plastic sink that gets stained every time I use it, so my sponge gets bleached. I don't think there will be many germs in my kitchen or on my cloths, I cannot stand seeing filthy cloths and flannels, Urghhhh Gillie xx |

I saw this on the news too. They were saying that health and safety and the fire service were telling people not to do it because of the fire risk. I always bleach mine or chuck it away and get a new one out and I'm still here! And talking of dishwashers......they're very good for washing baseball caps.....but not while the dishes are in obviously! lol |

This did cross my mind when I read it - I remarked to my husband that when I began married life with no fridge, a gas boiler, table mangle and a board - for cleaning materials, Vim or similar, bleach, sunlight soap, washing soda, elbow grease and one always boiled dish cloths and tea towels - my family never had a tummy upset. I reckon hospitals need a Matron, bleach, dettol, in-house laundry and in-house cleaning staff as they did a few years ago. We appear to have gone back 90 years plus when the old feared the hospital as you died if you went in. |

They had that on our local news tonight and at the time, I thought that surely putting a little washing-up sponge in a microwave for 2-4 mins (depending on the percentage of germs you want to kill, 96% or 100% lol!) would cook the actual sponge! We put ours in the dishwasher every couple of days, I'm sure that's hot enough to kill a few germs. Mandy :) |
