Lisa - you should be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay - assume you pay National Insurance contributions?

yep i pay national insurance ...i think if companies could get out of payuing their workers sick pay they would ...it doesn't make sense though you might aswell have more than three days off which i would think be even worse for the businessxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)))):

had top go in to work today with a possible ear infection because my firm are too tight to pay sickpay ....there rules are first three days you will not get payed and after that you might get poaid some but not all are they breaking the rules .am lividxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx))))):

No Lisa, that is standard, nobody gets paid for the first three days. It should be explained on your contract, how much you get and when. Some companies pay only SSP, not sick pay arrangements at all.

SSP first 4 days in any 8 week period count as qualifying days and SSP is not paid. Some companies do pay staff but NOT a legal requirement. After 4 qualifying days SSP works out at about £64 per week. Sorry don't have exact figures at home. T.O.R. x

Lisa-hi from Cyprus,a new EU member!!!!!!!!OH had a heart bypass in November-1st 3 days no pay-next months,wait and see if/when we have decided whether you are entitled to sick pay-he has been working here for 18 years and is a Cypriot National! Think yourself very lucky!

My company pay sick pay from day one, but to be honest and some of you will jump on me for this............ If sick pay wasn't paid for the first three days at my company and a lot more besides it would cut out those that phone in sick for the slightest things and those who just phone in sick when they fancy a day off. Thank you for that, Maddie's mate - my sentiments exactly! I have had one person take 28 weeks off (maximum time allowed) - the reason? She's addicted to speed! For every person who is genuinely ill there is at least one other who abuses the system. Employers do not have a magic money tree; you may pay 11% NIC but your employer pays another 12% of your wage over the limit. When an employee is off sick someone has to cover the work - and they also need paying! Right, my soap box has been put back in the cupboard - I just see the other point of view!

Thanks Woody I have the same at work ( yes I'm a manager ) people going off sick for a day - Monday or Friday?? with a sniffle or as you rightly say taking the max time off and thenn coming back! I have one at the moment who is playing the game - taken full padi maternity leave and has come back for a few weeks gone off with stress and is now coming back in next week - and you've guessed her sick pay has run out. How long she will stay before the next long term absence is anyone's guess And it impacts on those that are loyal to the company and who want to work hard and get on - - - -

i agree that some people swing the lead ...but i wouldn't dream of doing that...these people have put pressure on the people that are genuinly sick...my main sickness has been due to my asthma....which has been called by viruses.....i have been forced in because i won't get paid .....it is madnessxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)))):

I remember back in the 70's being told I must keep a register of the female employees who took days off for 'woman's problems'. If they then took time off for 'woman's problems' outside of their expected 'woman's problems monthly cycle' I had to haul them over the coals. Thank God things have moved on....Or have they??? On the other side of the arguement. I have just had 4 weeks off with a bad back. I could possibly have tried to go back last week but we don't get paid for the first three days. If I had managed the day or part of it and then had to go off sick again I would have had to start my three days again. Linda

Years ago, when I worked for the civil service, we could have 10 days unpaid sick (duvet days) a year. These were great for the days you felt a little 'off colour'!!!! Didn't cost the employer either. maggie
