Perhaps if the 'Prison Goveners' did the same as that Amercan One and dressed them all in Pink and sent them out to do Hard Labour, perhaps they would not want to go back inside again,Our Prisons are too much like 'Holiday Camps' and not deterants as they should be. Hal.

i agree with most people on here, every crime has to have a punnishment, but to see an o.a.p. sent to prison for failing to pay a bill, and then see a drug crazed burglar have his wrists slapped and given a community service order just makes my blood boil i honestly think a spell in the armed forces would sort a lot of the young offenders out, maybe thats an answer, who knows xxLynnxx

Robert I agree that prisons are no deterrent to crime, certainly not the way they are run today. But shouldn't imprisonment be viewed as a PUNISHMENT? OC

Gerry Report 24 Jan 2007 23:47

Quite simply the punishment should fit the crime. If you take someones life, for example, you should rot in jail until your life is taken. And when i say jail I mean jail, not a blooming rest home or country house where you can wander around the grounds and go for wlks in a nearby town. However why are we in the state we are? Why is there no discipline or respect? I would suggest that WE, as a society are to blame. Those in auhtority are no longer allowed to discipline our kids. A teacher or a police 'person' clips a kid round the ear as they often deserve they get complaints from us, the parents!! We reap what we sow. Gerry :-))

An acquaintance of mine has recently gone to prison for drug dealing. He is not a drug user himself, just a cynical greedy man. His father reports that the prison 'Isn't too bad - he has a room to himself, with TV, and there is a brand new gym where he works out most of the day'. OC

A report a few weeks ago said that there were a few thousand illegals who had committed crimes in prison - now if we were to deport them immediately they are convicted - there would be room in the inn. Forget all the appeals etc. send them back - other countries do - I am fed up with us always being the soft touch.

I would hate to be the person who has to try and sort the crime problem out in this country!! Before this can even start to be tackled i think something needs to be done about the drug problem but thats not likely to work either cos some people are making a mint out of it and getting kids hooked, who then commit the crimes to fund their habit. Like i said, i would hate to have to sort it out

I agree like most of you.; much tougher punishment, less leniency- If we need more prisons build the bloody things (sorry) Something I’d like to add……..…did anyone also see the policy reported ( a while back) for allowing “CERTAIN LESS SERIOUS OFFENDERS” to spend the remainder of a sentence in an open prison. There were no locks; they had keys, if I recall correctly they didn’t even have to report in, just return at night. Many were unaccounted for on one report, they just went missing!!!! And these less serious offenders were; Rapists Murderers Armed robbers Paedophiles Need I say more; I was fuming Csx

No Bryan l'm not happy about it either. We are too soft as a nation, we don't protest enough, we give in and the governments do as they like really. Perhaps we should all do a protest thingy and march to Westminster!! jude sarf wales :o)

The fact that prisons are full proves that imprisonment does not work as a deterrant against crime. It would take a prolonged, serious (and probably expensive) social study to find out why crime has such cachet in certain sections, and how these attitudes can be changed. It seems somewhat ironic that it is safe to leave doors unlocked, and to walk the streets late at night in many 'undeveloped' countries, but we cannot do so in our own. So saying, I agree that there are certain crimes for which imprisonment is the only answer. Alas, this government will go the way of all the others, and bleat on about it, throw money at it, but do nothing to resolve the problem - too many get street-cred from wrongdoing. Rob

Hello everyone I think it is madness. I wonder if the people that make these stupid rules would change there mind if they became a victim of crime. They do not live in the real world. I expect we will go back to the day's where offender's are given a holiday as a sentence. Just imagine some judge about 80 year's old sentencing someone to six months on a round the world cruise. If the prison's are that full why not put the offender in the Army to serve there sentence then perhap's that would solve the problem's the Army have with recruiting. Anyway where do you draw the line as to who serve's a prison sentence and who does not.

Instead of building all these NEW apartments or the Conversion of Factories into Apartments - Why not just put bars on the windows and doors and use them as prisons OOOHHHHH sorry that would infinge their human rights ..... even tho' they infringe on others lives .......... in the first place ....... Oh heck i'm on my flaminbg soap box now LOL XXXXXXXx

would it not be quicker and cheaper, to build extensions on existing prisons, seeing as we are being swamped with workers from eastern europe. bryan.

Without sounding Pig Headed .......... The prison system is well how can i put it ........... A Joke When my step son was in there they were locked up for 22 hours and they could sleep all that time if they wanted too and that lazy little blighter probably did. Prison is heaven and we have been told that some prisoners are better off in prison and safer .......... so when they are released on tag or whatever they will commit another crime to go back ......... because they get 3 square meals a day etc.....................

Sadly TJ is right, community services don't work either. The entire system is too soft. Many see prison as an easy option. Free food, free clothing, free heat and light, no worries as to how to pay the next bill etc The penal system needs a total overhaul. Sentences must be made to hurt hard and be a deterrent. As far as the lack of prison places is concerned then blame the present government. They have know about this for years and have done nothing but pontificate.
