I bought a 2006 version of FTM & think it's fab! I just used GEDCOM to take it from my old programme to the new one. As part of the disk there was a free 30 day membership to Ancestry. It cost £6.99 (I am in the UK) Penny

It is probably appropriate to make it clear that the FTM program, which is what you are paying your hard earned for is not regional. There is only the one FTM program, irrespective of which package you buy. Unfortunately the situation gets clouded because of the many different packages that are on offer. Most of these are only there to tempt you to part with more money. It is quite shocking really. The so called de-luxe versions which include extra data cd's are probably not worth the extra. I have yet to find anyone who has found any useful information from these. If you are not already an Ancestry subscriber (virtually essential these days) then do look at the packages which offer a discounted subscription as these can offer considerable savings.

Lucy, Why not download a free version of the software to see if you like it first? you can have a look then to see how it connects to the internet and decide what you need for yourself. I have a thread on the tips board with some of the addresses, will nudge it for you.

Hello there. You are actually looking for a Family Tree package -Family Tree Maker is just one of many, although I think it is the best, I have had it since 1993 through various releases. Am now on FTM 2005 which I find most comprehensive. We have 700 people on just one of our trees so it will cover all your needs. There must be an agent in Aus but 'www*GenealogySupplies*com' can advise. You don't need the one with all the additional CDs and I don't think there are particular national versions. Good luck Keith

I live in Australia...my parents emigrated in 1950 from England. Most of my ancestors were born in England...I've got as far back as about 1840 give or take 40 yrs...depending on the line/// My fathers line goes back to the Netherlands and I've been lucky enough to have been given a lot of details. I have 1 Aunt believed to have gone to the US around the time of WWII. I purchased a FTM on Ebay...my 1st purchase on ebay...unfortunately the seller has gone to ground and I am now in th process of getting a refund...Im disappointed and frustrated to say the least!! It was a good buy because it came with a $200 bonus 12mth sub to ancestry.com.(no use now..got nuffink!) I've bought credits before from GR, & couple other sites but they run out so quickly I thought if I had a sub I'd be better off. I've been given advice to get a FTM in case my computer crashes and I lose my tree from GR and advised to try Docklands and another I cant recall right now. One came with a 3mth sub ... Do I choose an Aust version? or a UK version because of the bulk of my relatives being british or doesnt it matter? What do I get with these? THey have ones with extra CDs...do these CDs contain census, marriage etc records ? Please all you experts out there tell me what to do? (i have 150 people in my tree so far...its getting a bit messy..eeks...) I know thats not so many with lots of trees having 1000's Lucy
