Don't pick it whatever you do. You can get stuff from the chemist shampoo's and stuff- very common don't know what causes it though. maybe go on a mother and baby web site and have a look at the forums. catherine xx |

I used olive oil with my son when he had it and it never came back but be careful if the doctor has said its cradle cap just do the following: Rub a little olive oil into the baby's scalp before bed. Comb the hair with a fine-toothed comb in the morning. When the scales have been removed, wash the baby's hair with a mild baby shampoo. They can get it in their eyebrows also but check that it is not eczma! As Catherine said you can google and there is loads of advice on what to do! |

Hi helen, as Catherine says, don't pick at it, it can make babies head very sore and red, there are products you can buy over the counter for treating it, it's very common and seems that babies with a lot of hair get it more, I think when you have a bald baby the head gets washed more often than those with hair, all of my babies had thick dark hair when they were born and I always washed there hair in baby shampoo, baby soap and bath gels done do the same thing. This info is most probably out of date cos my son is now 33.....but I used a product called Thovaline for bad nappy rash, and I put it on his cradle cap, and it came off a treat.... Sounds from what I've written that I was a bad Mum, but really I wasn't....he was just one of those babies that had everything going.... |

As Catherine said, don't pick it It's very common and very much like dandruff but cause by the babies skin changing and getting use to the environment, it may be unsitly but it is harmless. I was told recently that baby bath can agrivate craddle cap and make it worse. It's recumended that you was baby's hair in clean water (no bubble bath) with or without a baby shampoo but rinse well and dry the baby's head before adding bubbles to the bath water and giving them a bath (but don't wet their head again). Have also hear that baby oil helps to losen craddle cap. |
