And one more thing which TOR has just reminded me of... Be prepared for ancestors names to be spelt wrong, or even to have completely different names. For finding that they got married 30 years AFTER they said they did, for children to be born out of wedlock, it seems the problem was more common than it is today, and for bigamy, adultery and previous marriages you knew nothing about! Most occupations will not be that exciting, most will be AG LABS! Always have a box of tissues ready, because you will cry when you see that a GGG Aunt has been found in the workhouse after losing everything. It really gets to you! Oops, that was more than one...I'll get me coat! |

Andrea In addition to TWs tips remember you no longer have a spare bedroom. It is a genealogy research centre and having people to stay causes far too much disruption. Above all remember most of your ancestors are dead so you can't kill them for not filling in forms correctly. T.O.R. ;o)) |

And now for the downside.... You will need to employ a cook and a housekeeper, as the housework will not get done. Be prepared to justify the spending of £35 on cerificates in one go, rather than the electricity bill, as you really need them. Don't be offended if family tell people you are talking to dead people. When excited about a find, don't expect enthusiasm, although they will yawn enthusiastically! Be prepared to guard with your life the pile of assorted notes and papers, books and folders, CD Roms and floppy disks, pens and charts that will grow daily on your desk, the floor, the shelves and anywhere there is space for them. Allow the family the luxury of a second PC because they can't get on yours. Yes from now on it is YOURS and yours alone. |

Couple of Tips though, while you're here. 1, I would advise against buying credits on here, as you can often find the information on other sites which I will post below. 2, Begin with yourself and work backwards. Buy certificates to verify information as you go, and don't try to run before you walk, it takes a long time. You may need to budget too, it can become expensive. 3, If you get stuck, ask on the Tips board, people love to help out and you will be amazed at how quickly they do it. 4, Read through the Tips messages, you will learn a lot through them. Best site to join in my opinion, is www*ancestry*co*uk (change the * to .) You can register for free and have a good look round. Also freebmd.org.uk for searching for registrations indexes, though this is not yet complete, you can search effectively between 1837 and about 1911. To order certificates, you will need www.gro.gov.uk where you can order online (cheapest) or print the forms out to order by post. The tips board has a whole list of other sites which are hugely useful. Just enter useful sites in the search box on there and you will find the relevant threads. Happy hunting and don't be afraid to ask. |
