Its a bit like putting all the pages back in your folder, in correct order after youve picked them up from the floor.. I used to like watching the little squares change colour, when ME was doing a defrag.........not so much fun with XP.......strange aint I ? Bob

Hopefully this explanation will help you understand the reasons for defragmentation http://www.geekgirls*com/windows_defrag.htm (replace the * with a d o t) Dee x

defrag is short for defragmentation. Basically, as you add and delete files and programmes to your hard drive they become more and more fragmented because the computer uses the first available space on the hard drive. Over time this means that some files/programmes are saved in non contiguous segments so the computer takes longer and longer to find them. A defrag will piece the files back together again

Without risking sound a little bit thick, what's a defrag and how often should you do one?? My hubby is the 'computer expert' but he doesn't know either!

Did you do a disc cleanup first? Would make a better job. I do both at least once a week.
