When I was young I would often find my mother ironing away in the evening when I couldn't sleep (dad wiould be at work) and she would be crying if the hymn Abide with Me was on, she explained it was my Grandmother's favourite. I never knew my Grandmother as she died when my mum was only 16. Since then I have always associated the hymn with my mum and when she died in 1995, she left a letter for me and my brothers stating which hymns she wanted at her funeral. She hadn't chosen that one for my dad who had died 5 years earlier, his had been the Lord is My Shepherd, only there was a mixup and the organist played the wrong tune, not the usual Crimond! Mum said in her letter 'No Liz, not Abide with Me - I won't leave you with that!' Did she never realise it had been buried deep within since I was tiny? We might as well have used it. At the funeral I went to on Friday both hymns were sung and as usual I struggled through. They have both just been played and sung on the programme. They are the most chosen I think at other people's funerals, so I have a legacy that will always come back to me - beautiful hymns with meaningful words, but always bittersweet. Do others have similar 'legacies'?
