The petition is to maintain the undertaking that census information would not be released for 100 years, and that the FOI Act should be amended to prevent infor such as the census from early discloser ........................................... http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/censusconfid/ |

PLEASE READ As you may be awear there have been countless pattisions to get the 1911 census early in the past decade, non have worked. Besides which, we will get some of the 1911 census in 2009 and the remainder in 2012, because it will take 5 years at least to transcribe and index there is no point patitioning for the 1911 anymore. When you get to the 1921 census; opening it would mean that alot of OAP's would have info available that was put there by their parents -so they never gave consent - and that the government promised would be closed to the public for 100yrs under the 1920 Census Act, some of these people may have things to hide about their childhood or live in the same house as they did as a child. They were promised that this infomation would be kept secret for 100 years and that promise should be honered. Just think of illigitamate children, if they don't know or want their families to know; opening the census could be detramental. So to the 1931 census - It was destroyed by a fire in WW2, which goes to show just what the patition organiser of the petition for early release of the 1911, 1921 and 1931 censuses knows about the censuses, the next one was the 1939 National Registration due to WW2, the 1941 was never taken as there has to be a 5 year gap between censuses. These censuses were never taken for family historians / genealogists, it was taken for future planning - the fact we see them at all is fantastic, Australia distroy all theirs once the statistical data has been coralated - so thank your lucky stars that we get what we do. |

n Jean, Time is elastic -- it expands to allow any task to fit into it perfectly. You'll be with us for a few score years yet, we'll have the national registration 1939 records and you'll still be going strong :o)) |
