we seem to get penalised whatever in england. If you are ill and have to take time of work you dont get any pay for the first 4 days (I think) then you have to pay £6.65 for your prescription and in some instances you have to pay to get a sickness certificate from the doctor. no wonder some people are so reluctant to go to work in the first place.

Goodness, you learn something new every day! I never knew that prescriptions were cheaper in Wales. Like Linda, I have a pre-payment card which is over £90 a year, but it does save me money in the long run. Mandy :)

Morning Hoff. This really p..........'s me off. I ended up buying a pre-pay card 'cos my 'scripts were costing a fortune. I pay £96 for a year and this covers all. It saves me a fortune but is sometimes a struggle to get lump sum each year. Lin x

I don't think that it is fair that we all pay differing amounts for prescription charges... we should all be the same... whether it be £3, £6.65 or as I believe we should all have free prescriptions.. Here in Scotland we do have free sight tests but again I think this should be uniform across the country...

I'm under 25 so in wales I pay nothing (same for 60+) currently my parent pay £3 an item but in April all scripts become free. SORRY ENGLAND (I'm stuck her until June and cant afford my inhalers every month at almost £7 each ( 12 - 14 items a year without antibiotics and the like for infections) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This was publised 1/4/06 but the Welsh Assembly Government:- Patients in Wales saw prescription prices fall to just £3 today as the Welsh Assembly Government made the next step towards their commitment of free NHS prescriptions for everyone in Wales. Over the past 18 months patients in Wales have seen prescription prices fall from £6 to just £3. In April 2007 prescriptions will become free for everyone. Health Minister Dr Brian Gibbons said: 'Making prescriptions free for all is a major part of our drive to reduce inequalities in Wales and make health services accessible to everyone. 'Free prescriptions for all is the simplest and most effective way of resolving any inequalities and inconsistencies in prescribing. To introduce exemptions to certain groups would be complex to introduce and implement. Our proposals are straightforward and effective. This way everyone benefits, from the chronically ill to the low paid. 'Research shows that many people are put off taking regular medication that would help them live healthier lives because of the cost of paying for regular prescriptions. If patients cannot afford the medicines they need to treat their condition, the long-term costs to the NHS could be far greater in terms of avoidable hospital treatment. Making prescriptions free for all is a simple way of addressing this issue. 'Our policy is unique to Wales and steps have been taken to make sure it is Welsh residents who benefit from it. We now have legislation in place which means the people entitled to reduced prescriptions are those whose medicines are prescribed by a prescriber contracted to a Welsh Local Health Board, on a Welsh prescription form and dispensed by a pharmacist in Wales. 'This continued fall in prescription prices shows our commitment to providing the best possible access to healthcare for the people of Wales.' Notes: * The price of prescriptions has been frozen at £6 in Wales since 2001. From April 1 st 2006 the cost will go down to £3 per item. * From 1 st April 2006 the cost of a pre-payment certificate will go down to £43.09 for a year and £15.69 for 4 months. * Those people who will benefit from free prescriptions are those whose medicines are prescribed by a prescriber contracted to a Welsh LHB, on a Welsh prescription form and dispensed by a Welsh pharmacist. * Prescriptions will be free in Wales by 2007. * From 1 st April 2006 prescriptions in England will cost £6.65.
