I read on a bottle of Dettol that its not good for cats but it didnt say why,so am not using it to sterilise the litter tray, just good old Domestos. will try and find out why its dangerous. best wishes wendy

I'm sure I've read that any disinfectants that turn white (like Dettol) are a danger to cats. Vets sell a safe disinfectant. I just put washing up liquid in my cat's litter tray and pour boiling water in it.

I believe it can be pretty dangerous to many species including man in certain quantities.

Do you have a santizing/antibacterial option on your dishwasher? You can wash the litter tray this way. Just make sure your dishes aren't in there too! Otherwise, a dilute bleach solution is good. Rose

warning to lily loving gardeners - Lilies are also a danger to cats. Apparently the pollen that rubs off on their fur as they go past is very toxic. The cat licks the sticky stuff off its fur, and becomes very ill, and will probably die if not treated quickly. Always tell your vet that a cat could have come in contact with lily pollen. Eileen

Agree with Maggie, anything that turns white when diluted, includes Zoflora, harmful for cats. Boiling water and a drop of washing-up liquid, if I use bleach, just a drop of a cheap brand, then a good rinse out. Cheers Margaret.

Any disinfectant is harmful to animals, its better to use your own made from natural things. I use a little lemon juice in water,to clean the cat tray, you certainly shouldnt over do it,they like their trays to have their scent on it, over cleaning will get rid of their scent and could cause problems for them. Certainly agree with you, Roxanne, about overcleaning. Saw an episode of 'How Clean is Your House'. The lady had 1 cat and 2 litter trays. She cleaned them out whenever the cat 'did it's business', the cat ended up doing it all over the house!! They interviewed a vet who said to clean the solids out whenever they did them, to empty the tray twice a week, once without cleaning (just tip out the old stuff and put the new in) and once using a mild cleaner. Made me feel good!!!! mucky maggie.
