My younger daughter is working as a care assistant in an old people's home. She frequently works 12 hour days and usually does a 60 hour week doing many jobs not many people would like to do. She loves being with the people but finds there is rarely time to spend as long with them as she'd like. Recently she discovered that a friend of hers works 3 days a week as an assistant in an opticians (not as anything highly qualified!) and earns as much in those 3 days as my daughter does in her long week. On one of her evenings off she comes and helps me with my Girl Guides. She'd eventually like to do child social work and she'd be brilliant at it I think. Sue

Hi Jenny well I think well to be honest I know the Organization are at fault here for not supporting her, Organization’s have requirements implemented by the Governing body and must ensure staff are trained or work along side a trained person till at least they have finished there induction and core training, and I must add core training is a legal requirement under Health & Safety, I suppose the organization could cover them self’s by saying the On Call person is fully trained and available 24/7. Personally I would address this with the line manager urgently, also the lone working policy should be read and understood by this member of staff cos she putting her self at risk, Queen Lilxx

We have the same in our place. We had a bloke of 23 did a sleep over a couple of weeks ago.Although i have 2 seniors above me.Ones my age and ones 23 they are both so thick. We have just had ctv put around our scheme. The power went a couple of nights ago around 4 in the morning. They both decided to look through the recording to see what time.Told my chef and me they could not find the time as the cameras must of gone off and it had stopped and started again.I dont know how we looked at them with a straight face.Did not look at stop and start time. They are people in charge and on a very good wage. Queen Report 13 Jan 2007 22:55

Jenny if they have completed training and have been assessed as competent then I think it is just a matter of building there confidence and the only way to do this is to put it into practice but still should be done and assessed by a senior member observing such, the reason that social care is not very well paid is it can attract the wrong people all people that work first hand in care/support have one very important skill they care , you start paying mega bucks you do attract the wrong peeps , Unfortunately Queen Lilx

Queen Report 13 Jan 2007 23:43

Yea I agree the problem was privatisation where you have different providers competing and under cutting its all down to cost unfortunately, but something will snap it has to, Queen Lilxx Ps forgot to add that the Gov is now promoting Direct Payment where they pay the Service User directly,

Queen Report 14 Jan 2007 00:06

Jackie to be honest I find it double stands me self , Service Users can facilitate a facilitator to support them with finances and it can be anyone as you will be aware , double standards as I say open to Abuse as these facilitator can be anyone and no CRB checks , only monitored by Care managers LOL as if , Queen Lilx
