You know, there are so many things that have happened over the years that are inhumane and shocking. About 12 years ago I did some courses at our local College, and one was a Stress Management course. There was a woman there who at the time must have been about 40+ and I got to know her and learn a little bit about her. Because she had been considered out of control when young, she had been put into a mental hospital, and left there!! She had only recently come out and that was why her social worker got her into various classes, to help her adjust. She was given a council flat and all necessities, and very very slowly she became confident enough to use buses by herself and shop for herself, without always having someone with her, it has taken a long time tho. I still see her in the city sometimes and she has coped amazingly well, I think, she has a couple of cats. She has had to fight for everything and I am horrified to think that this happened in the last half of the 20th Century. Liz

Although I haven't read the book, I read an article in the paper, by her family, who say she has made it all up. Fine, ok, but there was one quote from her book, which shot me right out of my seat. She says there is no record of her ever being in the Laundry BECAUSE - the Nuns changed her name while she was in there. I heard exactly this from a dear friend, many years ago, who was in a Magdalen Laundry as an unmarried mother - her name was changed while she was in there 'to protect her and her family from shame'. Bit of a coincidence, eh, if it is a lie - my friend certainly had no reason to lie to me. OC

I still can't believe that in a civilised country that it was allowed to go on un-noticed or un-challenged. My OH is from a strong Irish catholic family and I'm sure that they would be appalled to hear of it - but did they know and choose to ignore as many obviously did, or was it out of embrassasment that it was ignored? Oh it made may blood boil to read it - as you say those poor children

It's true and unbelievable - My OH got it me for Christmas, Google and it brings up details of it - she is still fighting for the truth to fully come out and the Nun's and priests responsible to be held accountable for the horiffic conditions and abuse that children as well as adults suffered even in recent times
