In a statement, his children said: 'Magnus was the most generous, steadfast, loving and loved of husbands and fathers. He taught each of us how to live, and in the last few weeks he has taught us how to die. He did both with infinite grace.' What a man!!!! |

Icelandic names differ from most Western family name systems by being patronymic (and sometimes matronymic) in that they reflect the immediate father (or mother) of the child and not the historic family lineage. For example, a man named Jón Stefánsson has a son named Fjalar. Fjalar's last name will not be Stefánsson like his father's; it will become Jónsson, literally indicating that Fjalar is the son of Jón (Jóns + son). The same practice is used for daughters. Jón Stefánsson's daughter Katrín would not have the last name Stefánsson; she would have the name Jónsdóttir. Again, the last name literally means 'Jón's daughter' (Jóns + dóttir). |

I will never forget the day I went out with my dad and he told me about him - he told me so much about what a gentle and kind man he was and obviously admired him |

Yes, Rosalyn, that is how it works but imagine how hard it must be if Icelandic people come here - Smith |

To side track --when we visited my aunt`s friend in Iceland we had to look up her phone number by first name.--not surname, Ros |

Carol I forget (my fault) when does it become matronymic? I ought to know and am ashamed to have forgotten. |
