Bob, if someone nearby is mad enough to have a wireless network without encoding, why not use it ! Especially if you are on dial-up and you can use their broadband for free - tee hee. We can pick up up to four other networks at home: one is unprotected. (I do pay for our own broadband, by the way)

Glad you are finally sorted..... I am the opposite....I have a laptop that IS wireless enabled, but normally conneted via a cable to an ordinary router . the other night took it downstairs to watch a dvd, and when it booted it had found a wireless network close by......and had.logged on and got the AVG updates, before I realised what was happening,, Bob (must remember to turn off the wireless next time)

Bacardi, right-click the wireless network connection icon in your task bar and then click 'View Available Wireless Networks.' click refresh if needed. If your router appears click on connect. (you should give you network a unique name in the router setup page). Give it a while. (Routers usually have security set to off to ease set up) If you see more than one it may be a neighbours . Bob

Is there a little icon in the bottom right hand corner of your screen that looks like a computer monitor with radio waves coming out of it or something similar?

If its wireless then check to see if you have authorised the connection for the laptop some router/modems have built in security and require you to authorise any other computers to use that connection Paul
