Granddaughter age 4 sleep walked Christmas eve down stairs. She had never done it before. We put it down to having a cough/cold and excitement. But she has done it again and again down the stairs and her cough is better now. Does anyone hav experience of this that could throw any light on possible reasons? She doesn't wake up when carried back to bed and doesn't remember in the morning. Parents are going to put the top stair gate back up now. Ann Glos

I used to sleep walk a lot and even now can sleep walk mind you now is usually to the bathroom and wake up performing. As a child was aleep telling my dad I could smell burning was standing at my window. I did wake up then and could smell it and wouldnt go back to bed till the whole house had been checked. Also talked a lot in my sleep something my children have inherited

If im worried or excited about anything, i sleep walk even now and im a dreadful sleep talker! If i go walking abouts in my sleep, Dave says nothing, just turns me in the right direction and guides me back to bed.

Just a thought, they say sleep walkers dont come to harm, maybe a gate might be a new obsticle though?

donna, you mean she might be better without the gate? Yes I wondered about that. I am worried it might disturb her that it shouldn't be there, if you know what I mean. Ann Glos

Yes Ann thats what i meant. Right now even in her sleep she is aware of her surroundings, id be a bit worried to change them maybe. When i sleep walk, although im unaware, im told i know where im going (or rather i head off to the same place each time).........normally the kitchen and put the kettle on of all things. Some how Dave is normally aware when im walk about, switches the kettle off and guides me back to bed and i dont wake up.

Ann if he gate is on all the time then she will know its there and won't freak her if she comes across it in her sleep! Just make sure doors are locked and she can't get out and she should be ok! xx

Hello Ann My daughter (31yrs!!)does abit of sleep talking and walking, but l don't think she goes out of the bedroom - l think she gets to the door,if its closed she does'nt try and open it. Putting a gate at the stairs could be a hazard - she would'nt expect it to be there and might try climbing over it. Has she had any probs at school'playgroup etc?? Happy New Year:o) jude sarf wales:o) x

My eldest daughter now aged 35 started talking in her sleep on her 2nd birthday.Put it down to a busy day.Started walking at a later age and always noticed it was on busy days. She did escape one night into the street in a little white nightie and banging on all the nieghbours doors asking where her mum and dad were. After that we put locks on all the top of doors .I went on a programme years ago called 'Good Afternoon'that was about children that did not sleep.Very interesting.Annie
