Shelli I think you may be right. I seem to remember something about it being OK to leave a child so long as you can prove they are safe and are being looked after by a capable person - no actual age limit though Sandra |

From the Citizens Advice Bureau website: Babysitting There is no provision in law specifying the age you have to be before you can babysit. If you babysit before you are 16, the parents of the child are held responsible if the child comes to any harm. If you babysit, once you reach the age of 16, you have a general responsibility to safeguard the child. Angela |

Thanks for you replies, my eldest 13 wanted to babysit, but I said he had to be at least 14. He is very sensible, but I think its to big a responsibilty for one so young, if anything went wrong....!!! I know I did at that age, but times have changed. I have heard of classes for would be babysitters - maybe I will look into that. Thanks again E x |

Elaine my daughter14 babysits, and either the boys11,11 & 8 are all in bed and alseep, so they haveno idea we're out.. so thye don't play her up. Or we only leave one not all three, and they're never left for long. And by long i mean hour. And as a precaution my sister who is less than a min is warned they are home, and that she will be contacted first. |

Thought I'd better add, although Im a great one for trying to make my children act responsible.I would not allow my 13 year old to babysit beyond his bedtime (9.00 ish). I guess really I wanted some good arguments to convince him he's not ready yet. E x |

Elaine you know your child best.... and while i'm more than happy for my daughter to babysit i doubt i could ever let her brothers have the responsiblity (sp?) My daughter brings herself home from school and has done for last 2 anda bit yrs. never bothered me at all. But am already dreading the twins getting themselves home from high school next sept....... same upbringing just different kids!!! |
