the early british charts as far as I know were based on the sales of sheet music!

it wasnt until much later, probably the mid 50's-60's that they were then based on the sale of actual disc type records.......

I think the British charts started round about December 1952, for the second Carol. Off the top of my head, I think Al Martino was the first number one with Here in my Heart.

Edit - Just noticed how old the thread is, but I have got my big book of British Hit Singles around if anyone wants me to look up the number ones.
