Clutterbuck. English surname of unknown origin. Possibly an Anglicised garbling of a Dutch name. :-) Keith |

Christine It is not always correct to say that someone named after a village is illegitimate - although of course this DID happen. The usual reason for being named after a village or place is that it was originally a Manor. Serfs on the Manor neither had, nor needed a surname. When surnames became more widely used, in the 13th and 14th centuries, those Serfs would use the name of the Manor to which they were attached - because they were, after all, the property of that Manor. Surnames are a fascinating subject and one that is rife with pitfalls in my experience. OC |
