Joan of Arc(hives) Report 9 Aug 2006 00:05

Four people have died in a crash on the M25 which saw a lorry burst into flames in a collision with a car. Kent emergency teams have recovered both vehicles from near junction five and all the lanes have reopened. But at the height of delays, there were 15-mile queues back to Reigate, Surrey. Police said four people died, thought to be two adults and two children. The lorry driver, a man in his 50s, is in hospital with chest injuries and shock. M25 map Two anti-clockwise lanes would be closed again overnight for resurfacing work to take place on the damaged road, Kent Police said. Officers said surrounding roads were still congested, even after the carriageway reopened at junction six, and motorists were urged not to travel in the area unless necessary. They said the crash at about 1035 BST on Tuesday, near Clacket Lane services, involved a lorry and a Volkswagen car. On Tuesday morning, emergency teams, who warned drivers of 'substantial delays', said the front of the lorry had been destroyed by fire. Ambulances from Kent and Surrey attended the scene, along with Kent Fire and Rescue Service, and Kent Police.

How awful - another family gone and their wider family heartbroken and devastated, and the lorry driver and his family too, why do these things have to happen, where were their guardian angels at that moment? A few seconds, an error of judgement, mechanical failure, - just one small thing can alter the course of a live or lives so suddenly, and so tragically. Why? May these poor people rest in peace. Liz

That is so sad how awful for their families. My daughters mother in law lost both her parents in an accident a few years ago. It was devastating. My heart goes out to all involved. Germaine x

How very sad for all the families concerned. I do hope it was not the lorry drivers fault. imagine having to live with that knowledge. Pleas all drive with care and safely. Ann Glos

Hubby has just told me that he heard on the radio that the lorry driver has been arrested. Apparently the car was on the hard shoulder and the lorry hit it and sent it into the centre reservation. From the pictures on the TV news it would seem that the lorry cab then caught fire as well as the car. May the family rest in peace. Sue xx
