I think it probably depends on the make but I have washed mine & hung them over the line to dry. Vivienne xx

To be honest I would take it to the cleaners and see what they say. Many years ago I tried washing a double in the machine and it broke it. It got so heavy it mucked the bearings up. Would also be an awful long time to dry properly.

was thinking of taking it to the lauderette as my machine is too small. If you have them dry cleaned its so expensive that you might as well buy a new one Any more tips pse

What about putting it on the line and giving it a good clean with a hose or watering can, then it can dry on the line?? Did that with a large comforter once and that was ok. Just make sure the line is strong, lol

cant use a hose here - drought order! I suppose that its only the ends that are grubby, but it would be nice to freshen the whole thing up

Just been up & checked mine. They are Slumberdown feather & down. Label says wash at 40*. Domestic not reccommended because of bulk & drying difficulties. Mine are singles & I have a large machine. They are about 26yrs old & have been washed alot so have lost a lot of filling but they are fine for the occasional use they now get. A laundrette machine should be ok for a double I would think. They MUST be dried properly otherwise mould can develop. I always take mine to the cleaners as they have big machines and lots of drying space!

You could go into a shop and look at the labels on feather-filled duvets there. Stella

I was once given a feather mattress which I emptied to use the feathers for floor cushions. I used my bathroom! I moved all the towels and emptied the feathers into the dry bath and proceeded to fill the new ticking covers from the bath using rubber gloves. Job done in no time, easy to clean the rest of the feathers away by damping down in the bath and wet dusting with a sponge every surface then vacuuming. It is possible to wash a feather duvet but best done at a launderette and then hung on a line to dry (shaken well and often) in the wind and sun, the weather we have had before the rain came back would be fine as you would need to do it over several days to be sure it was really dry. Have fun! LIz
