Best bet would be to contact British Waterways. Many many moons ago we used to hire narrow boats/canal barges from them for holidays. I have a friend that lives on one on Sheffield Canal - finding a permanent mooring is the hardest task. They had their boat miles away before a mooring came up near enough for them. Good luck with your search! sue

There is a monthly narrow boat magazine (sorry, don't remember the name) which can be found at any large WH Smiths. This will give you ideas on price (new and second hand) fittings, repairs, licences ( yes,you need one!) moorings etc.... Or, as already stated, British Waterways. Hope this helps, Viv

Have a work colleague that has just bought a narrow boat and has got a berth about 4 miles from work. Will ask him next time I see him.(possible 2morro) Sue

Rita and I spent many holidays on narrow boats. A very relaxing holiday with some activity at the locks. Some excellent eating at the villiage pubs and the helpful friendliness of all other boat users. Our wish was to buy and spend our life's evening on one, but unfortunately it wasn't to be. Brian (i)

My son is self-employed and 'fits out' narrow boats to customers specifications - the customer pays for the shell and he does the rest. He also has complete boats for sale. If you email me I can give you his contact details/webpage etc. I am sure he would be able to help you. Jo

The magazine you want is 'Waterways World' it has hundreds of adverts for narrow boats in. Its VERY expensive to buy and maintain a boat - much better to hire in my humble opinion! Anne

Depends on what you mean by VERY EXPENSIVE to buy. My son has narrow boats for sale from about £35,000, which is cheaper than a mobile home, and a far better lifestyle. Mooring fees can be expensive but this depends on the area of UK, and the facilities on offer. He is based in Cambridgeshire and has sold boats to people who wanted their own home but had no hope of even buying a studio flat in the area - much better than renting a flat.
