Our vet said always better to under feed than over feed. Our old Lab Connie put on weight if she looked at her food bowl and when she got a bad skin allergy I cut out everything except basic food. No titbits at all and I gave her evening primrose oil. After 4 weeks all the bare hair patches were growing back and for the next 6 years - til she was nearly 16 and we lost her - she never had a problem with her skin again.

I give both my dogs complete dry food - one has James Wellbeloved and the other Wafcol - and it's much easier to judge how much to give them. I have to keep my GSD on the 'lean' side because he has Hip Dysplasia and my Golden Retriever, who is nearly 9, is a little piggy so I have to keep an eye on her. Perhaps try your dog on a Senior/Light food - my Retriever (called 'Bonnie' too) is on James Wellbeloved 'Senior/Light' and she's much better for it. We have a no tit-bit rule in our house now as well - GSD is allergic to too many things to have treats and it helps keep their weights in check. Kaye x

If you google, diet food for dogs, there is a good site from Hills. I get Ralph the Hills Science Diet since he was a pup. Im just trying James Wellbeloved at the moment as he sometimes as a dicky tum. You can order the diet food online.

Our vet has a selection of food that are for dogs on a diet, Im surprised yours doesnt? If you go to a good pet shop they should have a selection. I just went to ours and got James Wellbeloved for Ralph because he seems to have a bit of a digestive prob with rich tinned dog food. Denes make very good food - its expensive, but well, when its your dog, eh. Have a google for Diet food for Dogs, Im sure something will come up to help.

A friend at work has a darling Spaniel - her baby - whose liver has a genetic defect and doesn't work properly and as a result can't eat proteins. He has a special diet which has to be rigidly adhered to otherwise he will die within a day. Other that that he is absoultely normal. If your vet says that what the diet is then go do. Unless the poor thing has a physiological problem, then overweight is usually down to overfeeding by their human.

Hi Val I have a Sheltie and she was put on a diet 4 years ago by the vet. I was only aloud to give a small amount of dry food I had to buy of the vet. No tip bits either lol Now she has one tin of dog food and a small amount of biscuits and no tip bits at all. She is a good weight now but we need to watch her as she is lazy and will not go out for long walks (10 mins is her max lol) Julia

Feel sorry for you Val........Sis had a Sheltie, and could only feed her 1/2 an inch of special dog food a day. I am getting some really good advice on my cat thread, I hope you get the same level for yours.........good luck......
