They seem to be the biggest food retailer.....but I'm sure someone will put me right on this. They have a huge share in the food retail market anyway, plus clothes, insurance, banking.......their food, I find, is good and competatively priced.....but like everything else, there's good and bad....... |

Tesco was started as a small grocery store and grew. It was named Tess Co after the founder's wife Tess. Their daughter, Shirley Porter was a conservative councillor who was accused of fiddling. other supermarkets include Sainsbury's, Waitrose (part of the John Lewis dept store group) Morrisons (who recently took over other supt markt chain Safeways). The group Genesis many years ago did a song called 'The Battle of Epping Forest' on the Selling England by the Pound LP which included the lines 'taking the SAFEWAY home, TESS CO-OPERATES'. As Napoleon might have said, the English are a nation of supermarket shop keepers. |

Butterfly - Tescos is great, when I go back home I spend ages in there - especially as they open 24 hrs a day, brill for us shopaholics! I would compare it to a cross between Woolies and Coles except much bigger and sell a huge variety of things. Lyn |

There are Tescos everywhere, from the big out of town supermarkets, to Tesco Metro, smaller versions in town/city centres, and now another smaller version of Tesco taking over the corner shops, can't remember the name. Tesco is also beginning to take over Europe and is about to lauch in the USA. They will get to Aus eventually! Every little helps! |

I thought TESCO was short for The English Sales Company. ASDA, now owned by Walmart is short for Associated Dairies, I believe. Tesco had a chain in France called CEDICO, but I don't think they could compete with the French Hypermarket chains which are much more competative. I believe that TESCO have stores in the far east. I also believe that the fastest growing chain is LIDL. David |
