Patricia - I have card meters for both elec/gas. I live in a rented house and had never had them before always paid by direct debit. Now I wouldn't have anything else. I too am on a limited budget and always put the same amount in each month winter/summer that way when the cold weather is here I don't have to put in large amounts as it's built up over the warmer months. think carefully before you jump ship. we tried and it took us about 6 months to get it all sorted out with getting final demands and threats to be cut of just before christmas. Even thought we were paying by direct debit the company claimed we owed them money so we went to the bank and paid cash over the counter just to stop them disconnecting us. Finally when it was all sorted they sent us a cheque for £150 which they owed us... So make sure the amount to be saved makes it worth while.

Patricia, Our gas and electric went up quite a bit and we have been in credit up until May, any way hubby e-mailed them to complain and they 'phoned him back and reduced the rise. Tricia

Have you thought about having metres put in..that way you can control what you use, if you see you are using more than your budget for the week/month you can turn heating down, or just put hot water on once a day or something. worth a try, as you can see exactly what you are using......Lilly

When I changed 18 months ago and son changed a year ago the debits were transferred to other company (though we both pay by DD).

Patricia, just bear in mind that if you do change your supplier, even though you have been paying monthly, if you have any arrears through estimated bills, they will come on to you for full payment. Also, depending on how long you have been with your present supplier...........will you have agreed to any capped tariff's, over say a three year period, as they will sting you for this repayment too, if you leave them before the agreement expires. Good luck. Jen

Pat if you google compare gas prices a number of sites will come up. they ask you to put your details in and then tell you the cheapest one for you and others to compare. Dorothy
