Well that's really interesting. I was always taught that blue eyed parents would not have brown eyed children........ but understanding of genetics has come a long way since then. Generally speaking though I believe it works like this. Brown eyes are dominant for inheritance. Blue is the recessive, or less dominant gene. Pure brown eyes are given the key.. BB. Pure blue eyes are given the key ....bb From a pure brown(BB) and pure blue (bb) parent, you could have the following offspring. Bb....... these would show brown, as that is dominant. If a Bb(brown eyes) person had a Bb(brown eyes) partner, their offspring could be BB,...Bb ...or bb ie. Pure brown eyed, brown eyed but carrying the blue gene blue eyed. The greys and hazels are tones within these general groups.

As I understand it you are made up of 50% dad and 50% mum, which means 25% of each grandparent. So if you have a grandparent with blue eyes, you can inherit blue eyes even though your parent doesn't. But I think that brown eyes are dominant, so you would tend to inherit brown over blue. My eyes are green. Husband's are hazel. Our two sons have slate-blue eyes and greeny-hazel eyes. nell

I stand corrected 'Although not common, two blue-eyed parents can produce children with brown eyes,' says Richard A. Sturm , a Principal Research Fellow at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Eye color is a complex trait that depends on the state of several interacting genes. The gene that usually decides the issue (blue eyes or brown eyes) is the OCA2 gene on chromosome 15. But it comes in different strengths. A person with a weak form of the OCA2 gene will have blue eyes. Likewise a person with a strong form will have brown eyes. If you understand all that!!!
