Mens clothes are buttoned left over right so they don't get the sword caught up in the clothing if it has to be drawn quickly, building used to overhang to the middle of the street thus anyone walking under the overhang did not get anything emptied over them.

There you go again Harry - at your convenience indeed - how quick of youl. In answer to your question, it is because the men who do the service of restoring the seat to its rightful place on the 'throne' are just proving that they are gentlemen......something like walking on the outside of a lady when you go along the road, and opening doors.......x

Our Cambridge courier told us of a girls college purposely built 2 miles away from the men,s. One man cycled to the grounds of the lady,s college to be with his girl friend. He needed to do a piddle and his girl smuggled him inside and stood guard outside the ladies toilet. The man lifted the seat, and there, written in large letters was the logo 'Thank God , a man at last'. Happy days
