Liz, I agree with you, that comment was uncalled for. The majority of us do what we can to help, no matter how small or big our contribution to our fellowmen. Personally, I do not see the need to justify ones actions to anyone. Gods know and I know, that's good enough for me! Lindy ;-))))) |

Brian, I found that first comment of yours rather insulting. I do not live in an insular world. I have great compassion for anyone in trouble and altho I have very little money to spare, over the years I have willingly given my time to help others whether close by or in other countries, oft times to the detriment of my health and my own financial situation. When people were left homeless in Kosovo, I organised posters to go up and begged things from local shops, so was able to pass on several loads of tents, blankets, warm clothes, shoes and toiletries etc to lorries taking them direct to the needy. Every day I would open my door to more black sacks of things to be forwarded. The same thing happened on other occasions when lorries were organised to take goods directly to those in dire straits, and as one of Norwich's twin cities is Novi Sad,(Serbia and Montenegro) when they needed things, again I organised posters and collections, and passed on the things to Diana(M.B.E.) and Peter Beckley who over the years have taken tonnes and tonnes of things, in vans and lorries and their own car, or by plane, to help those in Novi Sad who had nothing. One lady had taken in many orphaned babies and I collected sacks of babyclothes to send her. If I had more time, energy and money I would do a lot more to help those worse off than I am, and I know there are many others on here who would do the same and do spend their time helping those less fortunate. So please do not make presumptions about the people here who in the main are kind and caring folk, who never cross over to the other side. Liz |

I have nudged this thread because I believe that most of you live in an insular world and subcociously couldn't care less about the problems of our less unfortunate brethren. As for the Government giving 'money' to help, that is quickly appropiated into the private bank accounts of those 'in charge', (and pehaps they get a free safari holiday as reward). What is the answer?? I wish I knew, the Con, Lab, Lib, parties are definitely not. Help should never be in 'money/cash', British manufactured goods as aid I can accept. Should you get involved, this can be a very emotive subject, well worthy of discussion. Regards to all. Brian (i) |

Hi. Jim. I, like you, have quite a bit of life under my belt. I am a middle East/Africa man and I found that in my travels the less they had the more they were willing to give. I have been offered to partake in their last items of food and drink, to be offered shelter regardless of my nationality/skin colour. I was always proud of the fact that my military annual reports always quoted ‘gets on well with the indigenous’. Whilst serving with the Kenyan Army I was on the Ethiopian border when I saw my first “Black Man”, a tall individual entered our location and on seeing my look of incredulity my officer, Lt Mutambuki, said that he was of a tribe that wandered all over Africa. He was as black as coal, 7ft tall and wearing a British Army greatcoat. We offered food and drink and chatted for a while then he continued his journey to?? There is no ‘colour bar’ and everyone lives together. Would I go back? Give me half the chance. Reading through your thread I can see that the words are reality and most of all our readers do not really appreciate what is happening in the rest of the world. Best regards to all, Brian (i) |

THIS PUTS OUR WORLD INTO A PERSPECTIVE MORE EASILY UNDERSTOOD. If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like the following: There would be: 57 Asians 21 Europeans 14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south 8 Africans 52 would be female 48 would be male 70 would be non-white 30 would be white 70 would be non-Christian 30 would be Christian 89 would be heterosexual 11 would be homosexual 6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth and all 6 would be from the United States. 80 would live in substandard housing 70 would be unable to read 50 would suffer from malnutrition 1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth 1 (yes, only 1) would have a college education 1 would own a computer When one considers our world from such a compressed perspective, the need for acceptance, understanding and education becomes glaringly apparent. The following is also something to ponder... If you woke up this morning with more health than illness...you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week. If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation...you are ahead of 500 million people in the world. If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death...you are more blessed than three billion people in the world. If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep... If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace ... you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy. If your parents are still alive and still married ... you are very rare, even in the United States and Canada. If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you, and furthermore, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all. Someone once said: What goes around comes around. Work like you don't need the money. Love like you've never been hurt. Dance like nobody's watching. Sing like nobody's listening. Live like it's Heaven on Earth. It's National Friendship Week. Send this to everyone you consider a FRIEND. Pass this on, and brighten someone's day. Nothing will happen if you do not decide to pass it along. The only thing that will happen, if you DO pass it on, is that someone might smile because of you. |
