Hi everyone ... Thought you might like to know that thanks to a blinding flash of memory - and two hours Googling! - I have managed to solve my own query. They were the 'Fell Farm' books written by Marjorie Lloyd (illustrations by Shirley Hughes) and originally published by Puffin in the 1950s/60s. There were three titles - 'FF Campers', 'FF Holiday' and 'FF for Christmas'. There are quite a few secondhand copies for sale on the internet, so think I may treat myself to a nostalgic copy! To quote one of the sales pitches: 'This is one of those jolly holiday stories which almost make you feel you've been there. There were five of the Brownes, two pairs of twins and young Sally.' The 'Fell Farm' of the title was based on High Arnside Farm (owned by the National Trust), about 1 mile north of Tarn Hows. Inbetween was High Arnside Tarn. The farm does B&B and apparently has a copy of each book for guests to read! So ... has anyone else come across them in their childhood? Anyway, at least I can now go to bed happy! Penny |

No, not Enid Blyton - I read all of her books too. (I was the original junior bookworm - Mum and Dad took me on holiday to scenic North Wales for many years, but I just sat in the back of the car and read!) Maureen: Not sure about Sally, Dick and Jane - can you give me any more information? (This is so annoying - I can almost see the cover of the book in my mind, but not the name or author!) Penny |

Sorry, Gwen - it really wasn't S&A or any other books by Arthur Ransome (my daughter, now in her twenties, still has all the AR books!). These were paperbacks, quite thin ... but a jolly good read! Penny |

Hoping that someone out there may be able to help me with the following. When I was young(er) - around mid 1960s - I remember reading a series of children's books set in the Lake District. If I remember correctly, they were set around Tarn Hows and were about some grandchildren staying with their grandparents on a farm, and the various adventures they had. It definitely wasn't 'Swallows and Amazons', as I also read these books! Have tried Googling and that 'well-known online book store'(!), but no luck. Does this ring a bell with anyone???? Penny |
