As mentioned on my previous thread, one of my close friends was diagnosed with bowel and liver cancer this week. She had no symptoms until Tuesday morning, when she went to her GP in agony and was also having trouble breathing. She is being given morphine tablets to control the pain. I think it sounds quite advanced (although she is awaiting further tests on Monday), but as she's already on morphine I don't think things sound very good. Any advice? AL

Hi AL I think it all depends on the individial, on how quickly the disease advances. What may sound as if its the end so to speak for one, may be a simple setback such as an infection in another person. All I can offer is positive thoughts for your friend, and {{{HUGS}}} for you Elaine x Ps I was given morphine shots after my caesarean sections, so morphine doesnt always signal the end so to speak

When son collapsed with what turned out to be a badly infected gall bladder he was on morphine and quite high doses - as they increased the dose from he left A & E and arrived in ward so do not panic because of morphine - it is a pain killer. Ann

Hope you two are right! I also had morphine for pain relief after an op, but knowing she's in so much pain is a worry. She's only 52 and it seems so wrong. AL

Try not to worry about the morphine, it is just a painkiller and does not mean the end. My son was on it for a few days after he had his spleen removed.

A friend of my sister had a similar problem last year and was given approx 1 year. She consulted someone else who said 18 months. Her and her husband did all the things they wanted to do, visited all the places they had always wanted to and then 2 months ago a check up revealed it had been a rare type of infection that looks and presents as cancer. It affected her liver and gall bladder. It turned out to be an infection of the gall bladder. She is recovering but is now feeling strange that there isn't a time limit on her life. Luckily they didn't use all of their savings!! So be positive and think the best!! Morphine is given in A& E when patients arrive with severe injuries. It does not mean they are beyond repair!! Best wishes to your friend. Jacky :-)
