There are also provinces. They do not have any governing bodies. I think they did many years ago, long before I was born. Now they are more or less just sporting areas and the likes. And we do have some Regional Authorities. There is the Auckland one which covers North Shore District, Auckland City, West Auckland (or is it called Henderson District or City?), Manukau City, Papakura City and the northern half of Franklin District. There task is to deal with water supply and transport and some parks. Not all parts of NZ have Regional Authorities. Hope that gives you a better idea of the shambles that is NZ!

There are no longer any counties in NZ. About 12 yrs ago the Govt decreed that amalgamation should take place in the interests of 'efficiency'. We used to be in Franklin County. Since amalgamation we are a part of Franklin District which now includes the boroughs of Pukekohe, Tuakau and Waiuku. We now have great difficulty getting anything done to the road where we live, takes much yelling and screaming, and I usually wait until the road is in a s**t awful state before I start. My dad was county engineer for 30 yrs and he must be turning in his grave at the way things have gone. AND our rates bill just gets higher and higher. I think there were probably about 100 counties and lots of boroughs and a few cities before amalgamation took place, but that is just a guess. Any particular reason you want to know?
