Dan, It was me who gave you the marriage cert for the article...... I am not a Quaker and have only attended meeting a couple of times, but it was much as Linda described above (would have been in the 1980's) and was also like that described by my great aunt who used to attend before WW1 and wrote about it in her memoirs. (so nothing's changed much!) I still haven't got a copy of the mag!!! It's the only one YFT have run out of and I got outbid on ebay!! BTW whoever wrote the article (LOL!!!!) made a mistake with the names! Was I supposed to have proof-read it??????!!!!!! Oops..........**hangs head in shame**.......!! Merry

My Grannie had it down to an art form! 1. Take a packet of bird seed 2. Find binoculars 3. Draw the net curtain slightly back to one side 4. Place chair in most advantageous position and enjoy 5. If spotted by any passing neighbour shake packet of bird seed and call out, tweet, tweet! Cherryx.

Re. your original query, LOL. My father was a member of Society of Friends and I used to go to Meeting for Worship as a child and early teens (70s). Ours was quite a small meeting. It lasted an hour - of silence which is for quiet contemplation and prayerfulness. If the spirit (as in Holy Spirit) moved anyone to speak on a certain subject then they would. It was usually one of the elders and theme was similar to a sermon or old-style school assembly with emphasis on what seemed to me at the time a humanist as well as pacifist outlook - would normally keep it short although we did have a couple of dear 'ramblers'. Sometimes a poem or excerpt from the Bible or other book might be read. Normally only two or rarely three people would speak during the hour (women or men). We never had any singing although I think larger Meetings might have - I don't know that. I also don't know how much it may have changed in the last 30 years - I suspect not much. I actually found it very peaceful but I often used to sit and think about other things! Linda :o)

Yes, I'm writing one now about how to position net curtains to get the best view, yet not to appear nosey. Every woman's dilemma I think you will agree.

There was an article about Quakers in a magazine last year. It gave a web site to learn more about them, www(.)quaker(.)org(.)uk. Cherryx

Don't know Daniel but I know they have to wait for the spirit to move them,so my Mam used to say, some of my family became Quaker's. Seriously even thought I live in a Quaker town i would love to know.
