I also have an ancestor that was a 'Carman' and that equates to 'Man with horse and cart' my family now call me 'Steptoe'.

A char woman was a woman who went cleaning at different houses each day/week and going back to her own home at night, whereas a domestic servant would be employed by a particular family and work for them full time, usually living in.

Both my Great grandfathers were described on my grandfathers marriage cert as 'Corn Porters', so dashed off to Old Occupations, and what did i find, corn porters are............ TOE RAGS.......well i never!
