When ours escaped he hid down the side of the cooker, and another one fell into a small basket and couldn;t get out. Check anywhere where s/he might have fallen in and can't get out. It'll come back eventually.

Is it too big for one of those humane mouse traps? You'd need to remove all other food though to entice it in.

Well Maz? If you followed by instructions to the letter, the little so and so should have been in the bottom of the bucket , fast asleep, with a half eaten carrot lying nearby! (S'pose you are at WHL - Alex is there too)! Jean Not my usual bedtime reading!! Daughter had hamster years ago...together with How to Care book. But she gave up caring for the wretched thing after it bit her badly, and I had to take over! Dee x

Little Lost Report 8 Apr 2006 06:09

the cages we had were the ones that unclip from the plastic bottom so made catching them easier. As soon as we saw them just slam the cage over them. Happy hunting

We lost our (long gone!) hamster twice. First time he went back into the cage on his own and was snuggled up in bed. Second time we found him in the (empty) bath, he'd not been able to climb back out again. Good luck Maz.

We used to have similar problems with gerbils and rabbits! Rabbits used to go so wild in the garden that we had to catch one with a large fishing net once (we gave up letting them run free after that) and when we had gerbils our daughters had to play with them in our small conservatory with all doors and windows shut so they could catch them more easily. The best rodent we ever had as a pet was Monty the Rat. He used to come when he was called and when he was tired he put himself back to bed. A really nice friendly animal who always seemed genuinely pleased to see us. Good luck with that hamster! Sue

Put a barrier in each doorway and a plate on each floor with some cucumber on it. Once you've sussed which room he's in put his open cage there. Mine was found the following morning fast asleep in his bed.

Maz, What are you like .... lol. Picture you sitting up all night in the lounge with a butterfly net. Think Dee has the right idea. Jean x. (wondering why Dee would be reading 'Caring for Hamsters' ... is it her 'book at bedtime'?)

Maz, When my hamster Hamlet used to escape he used to climb into bed with me and fall asleep on my pillow. Am I right in thinking that hamsters, like mice walk around the edges of a room where it is safer? Any chance that it has climbed onto a bookcase? Why not get a humane, baited mouse trap that will trap but not harm the little chap? Louise

~flying doctor~ Report 7 Apr 2006 21:52

How big is he? Try the old mouse trap trick. Tilt a bottle put his favourite food into it he will slide in easily but will cause condensation while he's in and keep sliding back as he tries to get out .Elaine Flying Doctor
