Asphixia occurs when the normal mode of oxygen ABSORBTION is stopped or obstructed, eg. gas/smoke inhalation, asthma, choking, strangulation. Suffocation is OBSTRUCTION of oxygen getting to the point of absorbtion. |

Oh, durr. I just saw it written in the article at the bottom: 'Death from asphyxia brought on by suffocation.' Thanks anyway :-) |

Daniel, I may be wrong & no doubt if I am someone will put me right. I thought Axphixiation was due to strangulation & suffocation was like if someone put a bag on over your head or a hand over your nose & mouth to stop you breathing. Hilary. |

Daniel According to www.paul_smith.doctors.org.uk/ArchaicMedicalTerms.htm which you ought to have bookmarked in your Favourites: 'Asphyxia, Asphicsia, or Asphycsia In modern times means suffocation i.e. lack of air or oxygen, but will usually mean severe breathlessness i.e. a mode of death rather than a cause Literally means pulselessness' |

I'd say so as this is the definition I found..... Asphyxiation is a loss of consciousness due to the presence of too little oxygen or too much carbon dioxide in the blood. The victim may stop breathing for a number of reasons (i.e. drowning, electric shock, heart failure, poisoning, or suffocation). The flow of oxygen throughout the body stops within a matter of minutes if a person's respiratory system fails. Heart failure, brain damage, and eventual death will result if the victim's breathing cannot be restarted. |

Does asphyxiation mean the same as suffocation? |
