I have a hole in my tree. Having lots of success with the pre-1900 ancesters but I have an uncle, born 1933. He married in 1955 and died in 1958 - I have list info on his birth, marriage and death. I have is wife's first name, initial and maiden name but.. I can't find her birth certificate or that of his daughter born I think between 1955 and 1958. It seems too recent to appear on any free lists. What's the best way to attack this ? Simon

It's local enough for me to do a search if there's a local office (Uxbridge is only about 30mins away). I don't know anyone who's got an Ancestry.co.uk subscription and have been wary of letting them have my credit card to play with. I've emailed the local FHS to see if they can help. Can I search the GRO indexes?

Ok. I'm just realising what a rank amateur I am at this.. so I'm going to push my luck with another question. I have found a birth, date is about right (I don't have precise date). Area is not bad (is Hammersmith not Hillingdon - close). Surname is right as is mother maiden name. What now - order the birth certificate and hope or is there more I can do online? Simon

Hi There is the Family History Centre 1 Mydleton Street London EC1R 1UW From Uxbridge you could get the Underground to Kings Cross Tube station, get a No 63 bus, get off opposite The Post Office about 5 stops, after getting off the bus, keeping the Post Office building (across the road),on your right, as walk up to the crossroads, cross over and bear to the left (About 11 o'clock) walk along street and you will come to the F.R.C. it has record books from 1837 to 2004 in Birth, Deaths and Marriages. for the 63 bus you will need a prepaid bus ticket but you can get a combined one with the tube ticket, unless you have a Freedom Pass. Simon ... i would think that if the mothers maiden name matches your info ... you are on a winner ! Let us know what happens... Sue x

I go to a main library that has the BMD indexes on microfiche, or to a records office, or the Family Records Centre in London. Then I order the certificate from the relevant register office. Happy hunting. :-) Joy Update: - sorry, I forgot to read last message first.
