Hi Geoff I live in Stafford so I should promote my own town! It is celebrating 800 years of having its charter this year and we are even getting a visit from the Queen and Prince Philip (in March I think). My personal recomendation would be Lichfield, steeped in history and with the most spectacular cathedral. By the way Staffordians are very friendly!! Helen

Visit Ilam in Derbyshire, it's a small village that suffered very badly when the black death was around. I think the story goes that a tailor from London came to the village and the insect that carried the plague was in his cloth, it nearly wipped out the whole village. Each house has the name of the person who lived there, very interesting. Gill PS if your interested in pottery you could visit the Wedgewood museum in Stoke- on -Trent

Hi Gill I thought that village was called Eyam - sorry if I am wrong but it was lovely there and a few old historical pubs - Obviously i only saw them from the outside (ahem)

if you're a fledgling troglodyte, there are some caverns to visit - the Blue John mine is my fave. If you're into stately homes, there are quite a few National Trust properties - Hardwick Hall near Chesterfield; Calke Abbey, near Ticknall, Derby; Kedleston Hall near Derby; Sudbury Hall near Ashbourne - also has a museum of Childhood.

If you are venturing into North Staffordshire, here are a few ideas. If you are interested in pottery, there is the Wedgwood Visitor Centre in Barlaston (recommended by Gaynor Bear) and Ceramica in Burslem. The Monkey Park at Trentham Gardens is really great. Biddulph Grange Garden is beautiful, and very interesting, if you like that sort of thing. Hire bikes and have a day cycling down the Tissington Trail. Dovedale is really nice. In South Staffs, you could go skiing at trhe Tamworth Snowdome (Europe's only indoor real snow slope) or visit Tamworth Castle. Liz
