We used to play lots of skipping games in the playground at primary school and in the yard at home outside our flats - sometimes everyone together, sometimes alone, sometimes in pairs - and it was great fun. I can't remember all the games, but we certainly played that one, Dee. We also played a similar one where one person started off in the big rope then reeled off letters of the alphabet one by one, and when your initial letter was called, you had to jump in and join them. It got a bit crowded after 4 or 5 though. When my son went to primary school, the girls there used to skip in the playground during his first year, but then a new head came, and she banned skipping (as well as other games) in the playground because she said the ropes were dangerous. No amount of protest would sway her. She was PC to the hilt, and that was that! CB >|< |

Well all this talk of skipping certainly seems to be bringing back some memories. btw Fred wasn't there a song in the 80's 'French Skipping in the USA' (or have I got that wrong!) ;-)) |

We had the same start to that rhyme, but then it went 'when I count 20 this rope must be empty'. It's funny how things come back to you. |

I remember the elastic french skipping things! we use to make then out of elastic bands but I only remember 1 rhyme for it:- Cat's got the measles, Dogs got the flu Chicken has the chicken pox and so have you!! cats got the measles, the measles, the measles cats got the measles, and out goes you! From what I remember all the rhymes we had for jump rope skipping (3 people or more) were about fourtune telling with the exception of 'when is your birthday' and 'Hi, low jonny pepper'. The others predicted number of children you would have and who you would marry. Does anyone remember skipping to hot cross buns? my friend was brilliant and could cross the rope mid skip. |

last summer the younger girls at school were fascinated by elastic skipping, even had it indoors when it was wet. have a younger age group now, so doubt they'll have the co-ordination and may end up strangulated!! |

Our school had a workshop too but I thought it was to teach them how to use ropes properly as my son was strangled by one!! |

Times change. Our primary school has had a couple of 'skinpping workshops' where outsiders come and teach children skipping games. We have several skipping ropes of various lengths for children to play with at break and lunch and they can bring in their own. Glad to say its as popular with boys as girls. But we don't have french skipping, which is what I did at school. nell |

According to the local news it seems skipping is making a come back. Do you or your children skip? It is meant to be good exercise I believe |
