...had anything to do with the London Liverpool St Travelodge? It's at 1 Harrow St. Would it be a safe place for me to stay for a couple of nights with my two girls (13 & 10) when we first arrive in London in late August? We'll want to walk /tube around & see some sights, as well as following up on a bit of family history. Since my lot are Whitechapel, Shoreditch, Bethnal green, Poplar etc, it seems handy, and for Liverpool St station. But I'n wondering if there are any hidden catches. Thanks - and Maz in the east End - are you far away from there? Sue (in NZ)

Hellooooo !!!! I haven't had any experience of it personally, but I would think that all Travelodges are of the same sort of standard. Maybe you should put 'liverpool street travelodge, london' in your title and someone may have actually been there! I am 20 mins by train from Liverpool Street, we will definitely meet up! Don't forget to let me know your dates so I can arrange the picnic to suit! Sleep well! Maz. XX

Sue I dont know when you are coming - but Travel Lodge often have £10 a night offers - check out their website to see if your dates are available. Regards safety, I think all city centre places are iffy - I cant see you would have any problems though, you arent likely to be walking around at midnight in the area and if you are pushed, take a taxi. I was walking round Docklands last Saturday night - I didnt feel at all threatened - and the east end is notorious - just take sensible precautions.

I haven't used the particular travel lodge you mention Sue, but have used many others........... they are very safe, clean & comfy ......... and as Heather has said you can now get a room for the night for as little as £10..... the website is user friendly and you can book online too.

probably good to bear in mind that Travelodges don't have catering facilities so you'll need to be eating out for all your meals. Some of them do a breakfast pack which is a bowl of cornflakes and a yoghurt I think Z

Sue, Please don't worry about being safe in London. It is no worse than any other capital city and much safer than some. Obviously there are some no go areas late at night but I really don't think you would have any need to visit them. It is the best City in the world bar none. Jean x.

Hi Sue, You will be pretty safe staying in the city, I live about a 10-15 min walk away from Liverpool Street. It would be great if we could all meet up like Maz say's and have a picnic....lol Jean........I agree, London is the best city in the world, as the saying goes, tire of London, tire of life........ I think in all these sort of situations, one important thing is to act confident - as they say, there is a victim personality isnt there! My son reckons I would have frightened any local yobs anyway! And I so enjoyed going in the dock pub with all the old photos of the docks before it was gentrified. And if you are friendly and confident, 9 times out of 10 you get back the same friendliness. I love it. I just missed finding a pie and mash shop there now.

Hi everyone - thanks for the answers. I went to bed that night, then we rushed off for a long weekend away that afternoon - and I've only just got back to the computer! Yes, I have seen some of the 10 pound (no pound sign on my keyboard!) deals. I've booked a 26 pound one at Liverpool before we go to the Isle of Man on Aug 29th, and I think I might book this Liverpool St one in London. The family room is miles cheaper than anything else I've found, and as long as it's clean & relatively comfortable, it doesn't have to be flash! Yes Maz, I'll try to get some dates sorted. At the moment we arrive very early 23rd August, and I'm thinking we might need this hotel to hibernate a wee bit. I need to connect with cousins etc, but will definitely be back in the London area again, probably some time after 18th Sept. I'll pm you. How's it going, Heather? Didn't I see a reference to your film hunt on some other site, or in a magazine, or something? Getting famous now! Don't feel like I've done much family hunting lately - will need some time to get to my brick walls again. I have to think of a way to condense my vital info into a notebook to take to the UK, otherwise I'll want to take all my big boxes of papers with me, LOL! Sorry for taking so long to say thank you. What bad manners! Sue (in NZ) x
