Hi Zoe It really depends where your pain is I tend to put mine on the muscle about 6 inchs apart. try not to get it to near a bony part it can sting then. As for buying them I was allowed to buy the one the physio lent me after 3 months at a cost of £36 paid to the local health authority. You can buy replacement pads if needed through them but just a tip keep the pads in the fridge when your not using it as it helps to keep them sticky good luck Jan |

I used one a long time since, but it didn't make a lot of difference to my aches and pains. Anything is worth a try though. |

We bought ours from Boots. I had a really painful shoulder and it was the only thing that gave me any relief! Chris |

I used one during labour for the birth of both of my daughters. I suffer from a bad back and sciatica. I bought a sort of tens machine from Argos in one of their sales. If you look in the sports section they sell the machines that send electrical impulses to tone muscles, they work like a Tens machine. I would recommend them they ease my pains. Louise |

Are these TENS machines expensive and can you buy them 'over the counter' ? |

I have'nt used it for back pain but did use it for childbirth and I was quite impressed. I have a friend who was assaulted and left with a broken back years ago. He has been left with a back problem that is deteriorating, but is kept going by his tens machine. It keeps him mobile when by rights he should be laid up. There must be something in it. Angela |

my M in Law gave me hers. I have a shoulder problem. I was sceptical but i found it very good. this is what i was told: when you have a chronic pain, the route it takes to your brain becomes embedded. ( like a rut in the road). If the injury has healed, the rut has become so embedded the pain signals dont stop so you still feel pain even if the injury/problem is better. The tens machine sends out buzzing electrical signals to the area of the 'ruts' and disrupts the pain signals. The pain signal then cant find its way to the brain as there is no injury or rut to follow and so the pain stops or is lessend greatly. I would reccomend you give it a go. i was very surprised. My problem will never go away but i use the tens machine when i think its getting too problmatic. good luck |

HI Zoe Yes i've got one, I use it for shoulder and back pain and find it brilliant in fact i bought mine in the end so that i could keep it for future use. The vibrations it gives out block the pain signal to the brain. just don't have it on to high to start with. I wouldn't be without mine Jan |
