when i was in the Sunday School choir, many moons ago, we had to sing this for an entry into a musical festival. I can still remember the tune too! Ann Glos

Myself and a friend had to learn that poem off by heart and recite it to the English teacher as a punishment for talking in class. Brings back memories! Linda x

Hi June I have just discovered the name Masefield as maiden name of grt grt grandmother! Then I saw this thread and had fanciful thoughts that I could be related to a poet!! Probably not but it's nice to dream! Kaz :o)

We learned that poem as a song at primary school. Not sure who wrote the music - it might have been one of the teachers - but it was an awful dirge. Shame really. It's a nice poem. CB >|<

QUINQUIREME of Nineveh from distant Ophir, Rowing home to haven in sunny Palestine, With a cargo of ivory, And apes and peacocks, Sandalwood, cedarwood, and sweet white wine. Stately Spanish galleon coming from the Isthmus, Dipping through the Tropics by the palm-green shores, With a cargo of diamonds, Emeralds, amythysts, Topazes, and cinnamon, and gold moidores. Dirty British coaster with a salt-caked smoke stack, Butting through the Channel in the mad March days, With a cargo of Tyne coal, Road-rails, pig-lead, Firewood, iron-ware, and cheap tin trays
