How strange> My local paper arrived and there is an article in it about early closing on Wednesday in our local town centre. We moved here 6 years ago and were a bit surprised this still happened, not all the shops but a fair few. Doesn't really make a lot of difference. Just don't go up there on wednesday if you want all the shops open. Where I lived as a child it used to be thursday early closing. |

Hi Zoe If I remember rightly Sheffield Wednesday Football team got it's name because they used to play on their half day off from work. Just a bit of trivia, but I thought it might be interesting Dee ;-)) Just found what I was looking for WHY WEDNESDAY? In 1820 the founders of Wednesday Cricket Club were local craftsmen whose weekly half day off was Wednesday. Wednesday Cricket Club was subsequently disbanded in September 1924. The Club was simply known as 'Wednesday' or 'The Wednesday' until in June 1929 our name was officially changed to Sheffield Wednesday. |

Wednesday for me as well as a child. I remember one of my jobs as a child was to look up the area's we were going to in the AA book to see what day was early closing and if I remember right Wednesday was the most popular day for early closing, followed by Thursday and I seem to remember Saturday being an early closing day as well. |

Not sure, but isn't it something to do with traditional markets opening on wednesdays, so the shops shut up early. Anyway the boutiquey type shops here in the high street close Wednesday afternoons, but the shopping centre doesn't. Heather :)) |

When i was a child most towns shut the shops on a Wednesday PM. It was so that shop workers had one and a half days off a week. this stopped when shops started opening longer hours and phasing staff time off. Shops used to be generally a lot smaller and had fewer staff, probably the owner and spouse and a couple of staff. Shutting on Wednesday PM meant husband and wife spent time together. Ann Glos |

Most shopping areas had an early closing - its Wednesday in Hitchin too, but not all shops do this. I think it was to do with giving the workers time off during the week as they'd be in the shop on Saturdays too. nell |

I alwaysthought it was just where I grew up that did this (shut the shops at lunchtime on Wednesdays) - but after a discussion just now in the office have found out that it happens all over the place. Anyone any idea if there's a reason behind it? Would be intrigue dto know, Zoe |
