Len of the Chilterns Report 7 Feb 2006 23:33

I can well recall my first shiner. My dad gave me a silver sixpence and I felt that I had become a man. len

Some time ago, when my son was in year 3 at school, I went to pick him up. Lots of parents I met on the way asked me if William was all right. I thought they were a bit confused, as I'd collected a friend's daughter, Gillian, earlier as she was poorly. Then I got William - he looked absolutely fine. But he explained he'd run into another boy at playtime, a lad in year 5 and hurt him so much he'd cried (you have to be tough in year 5). W was Ok, he'd fallen over but had a padded jacket on which cushioned his fall. I said Oh dear, like you do. BUT the next morning, when I saw this child I was appalled - black eye my goodness! Of course, the parents I'd seen coming back from school had only seen this child, so no wonder they thought William would be hurt too. The other boy got his own back though - his younger brother accidentally broke W's collar bone, again at school! Nursery is just the start, Wendy!!! nell

Every time he thinks he might be told off for something he touches his poorly bruise and smiles at me bravely. He really knows how to get me, lol.

thought you might have ! We sat next to a chap in Starbucks (in Meadowhall) on Sunday who had a cracker of a black eye, looked about a week old, nice and black in the middle but yellowed round the edge... his wife was only a wee lass, we were wondering if she had it in her to have done it lol

Poor darling Georgeous had an accidental head bump with another child in nursery yesterday. Today he has a black eye to be proud of. He admired it at length in the mirror this morning and received even more adoring attention from the little girls today than he normally does!! During the supermarket trawl tonight he got lots of sympathetic glances from people and I was given 'that' stare! Now the pain has almost gone he is enjoying every minute of this. I, however, am contemplating bringing my nervous breakdown forward by a few months, lol.
