But isn't the whole point that we demand honesty from our politicians. Just because it is his personal life makes no diifference. All he had to say was his sexuality had nothing to do with anybody else. Instead he lied about it. Doesn'''t anybody remember the homophobic campaign he ran against Peter Thatchell? Jean x.

Don,t like Simon Hughes' policies, but he seems to be a reasonable fellow. Don,t like his sexual orientation either, but that,s his business. It all strikes me as very much a storm in a tea-cup and as for lying, there is not one person about , in my opinion, who hasn,t told porkies when thought expedient. Happy days

I agree Roxanne - can't understand the fuss and can only imagine it's a lack of empathy. It's very easy for people to make judgements about how honest someone is about their sexuality but there are many many people who aren't able to be for various reasons - but mostly fear of how differently they will be treated. Society is far more accepting of different sexualities now but there is still much prejudice (seen plenty on this board) and a lot can depend on your background, your family, the circles you move in and even whether you can accept your own sexuality and that you want to live your life that way. Very often, the older people are, the harder the struggle to be honest with yourself, let alone others. I feel the same about Charles Kennedy - of course he lied about being an alcoholic - part of being an alcoholic is lying to yourself and others about it.

Why shouldn't someone lie in answer to an IMPERTINENT question? The media know how to wind people up to lose their cool and say things they would not otherwise. It is about time that they realised we are not interested in what our Politicians do in their private lives as long as they do not break the Law. Did you know that an MP can stay in Parliament as long as he hasn't had to serve a sentence of over a year? That is one thing I would change.

Roxanne, A lie is a lie is a lie. Major or minor. I don't think his sexuality comes into it at all. The trick with lying is not to get caught. Jean x.

What else has he lied about? Im not aware of anything else! But I think a persons sexuality is their business, nobody elses, if he want to tell people thats fine if he doesent why are people bothered if he decides to cover the truth, not really a point to get the inquisition out is it?Its not as if hes lied about something major!

Personally I couldn't care less if he's straight, or not. The fact is, he's consistetly lied about it, and that is what the issue is. Then again, he's a politician, I thought that was part of the job description.

I really dont know why their making such a big deal about it, are they not entitled to have a private life!!?? be it Gay, straight, bi-sexual or asexual, I find it very sad that these days these things are such an issue with some people. Roxanne
